Review 2016 / Start in 2017

Posted on

Hi everyone! 😊

I know, I created this as an Au Pair blog, but since I’m not an au pair anymore, but still have a life, I figured, I could just continue writing. Just because I like it.🙈

It’s been quite a while since I last wrote something and a lot has changed since then.

2016 started as a good year and ended pretty good as well. I went on so many vacations and had so much fun exploring places and meeting people, that I kinda miss it. But it’s a new year and I’m working on it so it’s gonna be even better than the last. 😊

Somewhere around September life hit me up and I made decisions about what I was gonna do with my life. I got into university of Paderborn, which is why I moved there at the beginning of October. I met tons of new people, made some friends and we had a great few months, and before we knew it, the semester was over and our exams are next week and we didn’t study enough. I was just too busy enjoying my life, drinking, meeting the expectations of my (by now) long distance relationship and just having fun. So now we’re studying day and night to pass our exams and afterwards  we’ll just do the same as before until the end of next semester and we’re gonna be just as surprised that we already need to study again.🙈

Anyways, like I said, the year ended pretty well with a nice little vacation in Spain, where Jonas and I visited my sister, who’s been studying there for a semester. We had a great time and enjoyed the last days of the year before we spend New Years Eve with some of my friends and had a lovely start in the new year (except the part that I had forgotten my keys and we were needed to try to wake up my parents only 4 hours into the year.)

I could go on and on about every little thing that happened in the last few month but I guess, that’s it for now, I’ll let some pictures do the rest. 😊

I’ll write some more again from now on, about my life as a student in a new city and if you wanna read it, you’re very welcome to! If not, I’ll just write for myself. 😊

Love, Kathi ❤️

I’m back home!

Posted on

I spent my last days in the US with the people I was closest to the whole year. My hostfamily and my girls 🙂

We went for last dinners, last shopping, last visits and last conversations before we’re gonna see us again. Some in a couple weeks, some in a year, my hostfamily hopefully in 2 years when I go back to visit.

Monday, July 11th, was the day. I had my suitcases packed, cleaned my room out, had thrown away junks full of trash and was ready to go home. My hostfamily dropped me off at the airport, I checked in, got through security and was on my own. Exactly like year before. Waiting for 3 hours until the flight is gonna go. Drinking a last Java Chip Frappuccino. Finding out the flight is gonna be half an hour late. Having another Starbucks Coffee. Finally getting into the plane, where everyone already speaks German and everyone is excited. I’m excited, but also confused and not really realizing, that my year is now officially over. I am looking forward to going back and seeing my family again, my friends, my hometown.. But I also know that I am gonna miss this. Living with people that became my family during the year, the people I trust and the people I was able to talk about everything and everyone. We went on vacations together, had our crisis, worked together and simply lived together. It is weird giving this up.

But here I am, in the plane, still answering in English when people talk to me.

I’m landing at 5 in the morning and am out of the exit with my suitcases about 20 minutes later, where Hanna is already waiting for me ☺️ She got up at 3am just to come and pick me up. 🙈☺️

It’s good to be back.

Back in my hometown we do some sightseeing (haha🙈) and have some brunch. Meet another one of my friends for a couple minutes, stroll through the city, pick up my brother after school, surprise my daddy at work and are at my house right before my mom gets home. She is surprised, but happy, of course, when she sees me.:)

Since then, the weeks have been flying by.

I went to see my sister in Ludwigsburg and we visited Stuttgart together, I visited my friend David in Karlsruhe and met Luzi, the girl I met at my Rocky Mountain Tour, again.

I went out with friends, enjoyed beeing able to drink beer and wine again, got back together with my boyfriend Jonas, and spent some qualitytime with my family.

Right now I am waiting for feedback from Universities, hoping that someone takes me. If not, I will probably staying in Trier for at least the next year, to start studying here.

I guess that’s it. My au pair adventure is officially over now. Life goes on and what stays are memories of an amazing year, where I got to travel, live with an amazing family and made some really good friends!

Even though it also was a tough year, I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way!

Love, Kathi ❤️

Chicago

Posted on Updated on

The kids haven’t been with us the last three weeks, so I figured to use my free time to make a first weekend trip. Well, it wasn’t really a weekend trip, I departed on Wednesday night with a train from the really small train station. It took me 13 hours to arrive in Chicago, in which I got to know a guy from California, who had the seat next to me. He was really nice and we talked the whole time (except the time we were asleep). Sleeping in a train is the most uncomfortable thing ever. You wake up every half an hour because you can’t really find a good position that doesn’t look too weird, without lying on the person next to you.

When I arrived at the station, I thought it would be a good idea to stretch my legs after 13 hours of sitting and walk to the apartment I was staying at ( which it wasn’t because it was way too hot to walk 30 minutes through the crowded city. But I got a first view of the city, which was great 😊

When I got to the apartment, I met the girl who lives there, who is nice and showed me around the city a little bit.:)

On Friday I just had a chilly day on the beach and shopping on Michigan avenue, and spent the evening at the beach again, which was lovely.

Before I got on the train again on Saturday evening I spend a little time in the city, because I had to leave the apartement at noon, so I just walked around a little bit, bought enough to eat for the train (which was of course not enough 😃) and was was on time at the train station. The way back was even worse because the AC was broken and even if it was okay in the beginning, the later it got, the hotter it got and sleeping was kinda impossible. So I was really glad when I finally got home again and was able to sleep in my own bed for a couple hours.

I had a great time in Chicago and I’m glad that I went there, even if sitting in the train for 13 hours is not the nicest way of travelling.

Tomorrow the kids are coming back and I’m already excited to final see them for 2 weeks in a row and get to do why I’m here 😊

Countdown: 26 days to go!

Posted on Updated on

Time is flying by so fast and it’s only 26 days to go until I’m sitting in the plane to New York City where my big adventure will begin. At the moment I have so much to do, I got my international driver’s license, my passport, new glasses and I’m waiting for a date to get my visa approved. There are so many things that have to be done and my excitement is growing every day. On friday I will go to the second farewell party of a friend who will be an au pair in the usa, too. It’s so exciting to know that when we will meet again we’re going to live in the US and will be so far away from home. But it’s also really sad to see all the friends saying goodbye because there are so many people we won’t see for a whole year and that’s a pretty weird feeling. My own party will be on the 13th of June, two days before I’ll be on my journey. I’m already thinking about what to take with me and what I could leave at home, but at the same time I’m trying to spend all my time with my friends and family, to enjoy every single moment, before we all start in our new lives.
So, for now that is everything I wanted to write down for all the people who want to know what it feels like to have only a few times left. I tell you what it is: pure excitement and a thrill of anticipation!

It’s happening!

Posted on Updated on

Hello!

I’m Kathi, 19 years old, from Germany and you are here to read about my year as an au pair!
Last week I found my perfect family, which I will spend the next year with. They live in a small town called Huntington in West Virginia and have 4 children. The twin boys are 13, the younger brother 10 and the little girl is 5. The kids will be with me every other week because their parents are divorced and they spend one week with their dad and his wife (where I will live, too) and one week with their mom.
Having the kids every other week does not mean that I will work only every other week. Since they have a huge house, there is always a little work to be done, which I will do when the kids are not at home.

I will fly to New York on the 15th June to spend 5 days at the training school and after that my year as an au pair can finally begin!

I am already so excited and I can’t even realize that my dream is now coming true!

Love, Kathi.❤️
